PROFESSIONALISM

Rationale

As part of the future work force, it was important for me to learn how to interact with others and create together. This will happen often in schools as I work along side paraprofessionals, principles, fellow teachers, and my students and their families. Many of the classes I took at Auburn guided me in the field of professionalism. I often had to create alongside others, teach with others who had different styles than myself, or be aware of what was going on in the world of current events. Linked below are examples of such activities.

CURRENT ISSUES IN EDUCATION GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

This assignment involved identifying a controversial topic in education and researching the issue. I chose to investigate educational funding and its link to student achievement. I was shocked by the obvious need for increased funding. Linked below is a graphic organizer I made of my initial ideas on the issue.

PROFESSIONAL BOOK CLUB

In small groups, we each read a book in order to learn more about professional areas in education. My group read The Power of Our Words by Paula Denton, it discussed how to use what we say wisely in the classroom and other classroom management techniques. Linked below is the infographic we made summarizing the book. We also created a presentation and commercial for this project so that we could truly understand the text. I highly recommend this book!

VIRTUAL STEM CAMP LESSON PLANS

Due to the 2020 Corona Virus Pandemic, Auburn was unable to host its yearly STEM camp for elementary students. However, the University of Kentucky and other colleges created a virtual STEM camp for students to watch on Zoom, taught by teaching candidates. I was given the opportunity to teach a session of this camp and introduces my students to STEM via structures. We built straw towers and discussed the role of civil engineers. Linked below is the lesson plan for this activity.

READING STRATEGY GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

This graphic organizer explains the difference between reading strategies and reading skills. This assignment was for my Foundations of Language and Literature Instruction class and includes sources from various assigned readings. It is important that educators understand the differences in skills and strategies so they can help their students improve their reading. This graphic is a helpful and  researched based reminder.
